{"id":1614,"date":"2026-05-05T17:30:24","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T16:30:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/undod.cymru\/?p=1614"},"modified":"2026-05-05T17:39:17","modified_gmt":"2026-05-05T16:39:17","slug":"10-reasons-why-not-to-vote-reform","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/undod.cymru\/en\/2026\/05\/05\/10-reasons-why-not-to-vote-reform\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Reasons Why Not To Vote Reform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Senedd Election set for Thursday you may well have reached the point where you just want it to be over and done with. Whisper it quietly, but that\u2019s probably how a lot of knackered candidates and canvassers feel.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, there\u2019s probably a lot of you who are still weighing things up, and wondering who you will vote for, or if you\u2019ll bother at all. This listicle is for those of you in particular pondering placing an X next to the name Reform &#8211; or who know friends and family who are weighing up the possibility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For full disclosure, I am not (currently) in a Party and have no desire to sway who you might vote <em>for.<\/em>\u00a0 However, I absolutely am going to suggest why you should <em>not<\/em> vote for Reform &#8211; assuming that you are not either filthy rich, a massive English nationalist, or so mad at the world you just want to see it implode.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I would have some sympathy for that, mind, because among other things I was one of the editors of a volume called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.parthianbooks.com\/products\/the-welsh-way-essays-on-neoliberalism-and-devolution\">The Welsh Way: Essays on Devolution and Neoliberalism<\/a> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that exposed just how badly the so-called \u201cDevolution Dividend\u201d has been frittered away.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The cost of living is soaring and everyone\u2019s life seems to be getting harder &#8211; and successive Labour governments in the Senedd have seemingly done little to shield us from the worst of it.\u00a0 So if you are therefore feeling disenfranchised, pissed off and generally suspicious of Party Politics you are entitled to be.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I also appreciate, as our excellent colleague Catrin Ashton <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/undod.cymru\/en\/2026\/04\/19\/pam-reform-cipolwg-or-cymoedd\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has explained<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, why some communities are going to be even more angry than others. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nevertheless, while such feelings and frustrations are totally valid, it is important to consider why voting Reform for so many of us would be biting off our nose to spite our face. It just won\u2019t do us any good. In fact it&#8217;s likely to cause us more harm. And here are 10 reasons why.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1, They are <\/b><b><i>not<\/i><\/b><b> the Party of Change<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I mean the name, and their whole shtick, suggests that they really should be about changing the status quo.\u00a0 But they are not.\u00a0 And don\u2019t quote me, rather listen to the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ifs.org.uk\/articles\/initial-response-reform-uks-welsh-manifesto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Institute of Fiscal Studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> who say there\u2019s nothing particularly new in their manifesto and that it echoes &#8211; wait for it &#8211; <em>Conservative<\/em> policies. Yes, the Conservatives, whose name tells us exactly what they are about: conserving things as they are and maintaining the status quo.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2, They are <\/b><b><i>not<\/i><\/b><b> \u201cAnti-establishment\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A connected part of their shtick is the idea that they are the outsiders, the new kids on the block, the Party who are going to \u2018shake it up\u2019.\u00a0 This is neatly captured in their description of themselves as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anti-establishment. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Except, this is, to use a technical term, bollocks. They are both funded primarily (to the tune of \u00a324 million &#8211; 67% of their income) by the corporate establishment &#8211;\u00a0 oil and gas industries specifically &#8211; whilst being stuffed to the gills with members of one of the biggest, most historic and powerful establishments known in the history of Britain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3, They are packed full of Tories<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, you guessed it, they are stuffed with Tories. To repeat, the Tories. Yes, we know the ones. The Party of Churchill. Enoch Powell, and yes, one Margaret Thatcher.\u00a0 The Party that has shafted Wales remorselessly for decades if not centuries. Estimates of how many of their current English councillors are former Tories sits at around 75% whilst 5 of their 8 MPs are former blues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And of course, their new shiny Wales leader (Dan Thomas, Lord Blackwood of Bath) is the former Tory Council leader of Barnet where his (failed) Thatcherite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cymru-wales.unison.org.uk\/news\/2026\/04\/reform-leaders-outsourcing-track-record-is-a-warning-for-wales-says-unison\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">privatisation programme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would have made even the Iron Lady blush. And last but not least, Nigel Farage was a Tory from a very young age because, to quote him directly, what Thatcher tried in the 1980s \u201creally excited him\u201d.\u00a0 Each to his own, Nigel old boy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4, They are supported by the Global Elite<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A further part of their anti-establishment act leans into the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?reload=9&amp;v=42GRXbSHdto\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wider culture of conspiracy theories<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, positioning them in such a way as to attract those who are persuaded by these ideas, implying that they are somehow fighting against these nebulous global actors and of course that all-powerful entity, the \u2018global elite\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course the irony is that as well as being funded by a very tangible global elite (including one <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmog.com\/2026\/04\/30\/reform-uk-nigel-farage-millions-donations-fossil-fuel-interests-climate-science-deniers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">particularly generous crypto billionaire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), they are tied up with some of the worst global actors. Remember Farage\u2019s mate Nathan Gill who was the Welsh leader of their earlier outfit, UKIP, who is in the clink serving time for doing the Russians favours?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s before we even consider Farage\u2019s bully\u2019s-best-friend relationship with the Orange terror and friend-of-Epstein that is Donald Trump, whose recent \u2018strategic cooling\u2019 in their bromance came as Farage clocked that being his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unherd.com\/newsroom\/tories-vie-with-nigel-farage-to-be-uks-trump-whisperer\/#:~:text=And%20Trump%20himself%20is%20surely,free%20trade%20and%20open%20borders.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2018UK Whisperer\u2019<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was not doing his rep much good.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5, They are an English <\/b><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">Party<\/span><\/strong><b> Limited Company<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t get me wrong.\u00a0 Some of my best friends are English.\u00a0 Some of the nicest chaps you\u2019ll come across are from Shakespeare\u2019s green and pleasant land.\u00a0 But what have we learnt about the English from being their neighbours for about 1500 years?\u00a0 You don\u2019t really want them in charge of you if you can help it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet that\u2019s exactly what voting for Reform will do, put Farage in charge, and with no hint of any checks and balances in Wales. Because remember, it\u2019s his <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open-britain.co.uk\/blog\/reform-is-a-business-not-a-party\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not a democratic party, and as much as Dan will huff and puff about him being in charge, he and his ASs will always be beholden to an English multi-millionaire who thinks the Welsh speak a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/wales\/2026-03-24\/fm-accuses-farage-of-insulting-wales-in-foreign-speakers-video\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foreign language<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Whilst not particularly scientific, I personally don\u2019t have a very good feeling about this. What about you?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6, They are not a party of the Working Class<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s difficult to tell exactly where the idea came from that an English spiv who went to public school and whose professional life has been dedicated to finance, and making money out of people with a lot more finance than him, might have ever created a party for the working classes.\u00a0 But we are where we are.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suffice to say this one is not just bollocks, but ascends to the next category of \u201cutter bollocks\u201d.\u00a0 Sure, he throws in a few lines about reopening mines, fighting for the miners\u2019 pension and firing up the steel works again, but given who he is, the people who are paying him, and also their policies<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; that our friends the <\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/ifs.org.uk\/welsh-election-2026#:~:text=Reform%20UK's%20Welsh%20manifesto%20echoes,for%20the%20accompanying%20spending%20cuts.\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IFS<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest will leave lower income earners substantially worse off &#8211; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he is definitely not in it for you, your family, or your community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>7, What little record they have in office is pretty dire<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reform benefit inordinately from never having been in national power either in the Senedd or Westminster.\u00a0 It is therefore incredibly easy to slag off the opposition and to make out they will bring improvements because they don\u2019t have their own record of compromises, disasters and embarrassments to be referred to in debate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1507\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1507\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1507\" src=\"https:\/\/undod.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/960px-Dan_Thomas_Reform_UK_Wales_cropped_2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/undod.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/960px-Dan_Thomas_Reform_UK_Wales_cropped_2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/undod.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/960px-Dan_Thomas_Reform_UK_Wales_cropped_2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/undod.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/960px-Dan_Thomas_Reform_UK_Wales_cropped_2-768x766.jpg 768w, https:\/\/undod.cymru\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/960px-Dan_Thomas_Reform_UK_Wales_cropped_2.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1507\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dan Thomas &#8211; ShahNixon, CC BY 4.0<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, if we look at the councils where they (or their ilk) have held power, the signs are not good.\u00a0 Look up their record in Staffordshire or Nottinghamshire, or the record of one of their high profile politicians during his Tory leadership of Barnet Council (oh, sorry, I may have mentioned that earlier).\u00a0 We await the results of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/meridian\/2026-02-12\/reform-council-passes-first-budget-despite-warnings-of-extreme-risk\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kent Council<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s \u2018casino economics\u2019 although they already have succeeded in breaking their pledge to bring down Council Tax by actually increasing it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a wider scale, it would be wise to look at the Tory rejects who have joined their ranks in Westminster &#8211; the same Tories who spent a good few years making a disaster of everything with their reverse-midas touch.\u00a0 The prospects for success are not good, even on their own terms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>8, They are fully-paid for Grifters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not to labour the point here but I will reference again Farage\u2019s call to reopen the mines and his pledge to fire up the Port Talbot blast furnace once more. WTF. And now he\u2019s rowed back on that, what do he and his peeps in Wales have to offer? SFA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Again, we need to consider where all the anti net-zero stuff is coming from and why they\u2019d spout pipe dreams about re-industrialisation.\u00a0 Follow the money as they say, and the folks at the Good Law Project <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.desmog.com\/2026\/04\/30\/reform-uk-nigel-farage-millions-donations-fossil-fuel-interests-climate-science-deniers\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">explain a lot<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when they state \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reform is less a political party and more a very highly paid public-facing lobby group for oil and gas interests.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Three quarters of their income since 2019 has come from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate deniers and fossil fuel interests, and in that context it makes a lot of sense that they vow to \u201cscrap net zero\u201d, end subsidies for renewables, approve oil and gas exploration and bring back coal, and lift the fracking ban.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The prospect of which leads us to consider the impact of drilling in the Welsh countryside and the real rural priorities of Dan Thomas and his buddies when cosplaying as farmers. Can Wales and its already fragile environment &#8211; which is increasingly at risk of flooding due to the climate change that Reformers often deny &#8211; afford less protections and the undoing of bodies such as Natural Resources Wales?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>9, Farage the Racist.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.itv.com\/news\/2025-12-05\/timeline-of-allegations-of-racism-against-nigel-farage-and-his-responses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">testimony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is there for all to see. Obviously it doesn\u2019t bother a lot of people in the same way it did twenty years ago as we\u2019ve seen it normalised for so long by Farage and vast swathes of the political establishment.\u00a0 But it\u2019s still racism, it\u2019s still wrong, it&#8217;s still the harbinger of all types of other intolerance and hatred, and by any measure of a decent person (which most Welsh people are according to my scientific investigations over 40+ years of exchanges) it definitely should not be a vote winner. In fact, it should put you right off.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>10, They won\u2019t make our lives better.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If there is a bottom line, where we think about voting for our own benefit, then we should be in no doubt, given that they <\/span><b>1)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> won\u2019t change anything for real <\/span><b>2)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are not anti-establishment <\/span><b>3)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are funded by members of the global monied elite <\/span><b>4)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are full of Tories <\/span><b>5)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are run and owned by an English spiv <\/span><b>6) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aim to attack working class interests <\/span><b>7)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have been incompetent when in power <\/span><b>8)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are shysters with <\/span><b>9)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a racist for a leader (who has some pretty dubious views about the Welsh to boot), then it&#8217;s a fair bet they will not be making any of our lives in Wales better anytime soon. Unless perhaps you are pretty damn rich.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Where next?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So where does that leave you if you were considering Reform but are having second thoughts, and are left with no options because you aren\u2019t persuaded by the rest of them?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In that case one suggestion is registering your dissatisfaction by going to the election booth and spoiling your ballot (you can even write some amusing profanities if you need some catharsis, and want to put a smile on the face of those doing the count), then go home, keep an eye out for the results, and when you find out who the 6 members are for your super-constituency, hold them to account.\u00a0 Go to their surgery hours, express your frustration, ask them for help with your issues.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You will find out that at least some of them will be good people who are eager to help and will want to hear from you. These are the politicians who we <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lend our support to, and these are the people who <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">make a difference to our lives. If enough of them are encouraged into doing their job properly, it is actually quite possible that the Senedd can start to deliver on its promise, and life may get a little better for us all.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>With the Senedd Election set for Thursday you may well have reached the point where you just want it to be over and done with.
